When running sendmail using the /bin/sh as the prog mailer I get the same problem:

Jan 19 12:44:12 cheviotdb sendmail[23680]: o0JCiCpl023680: from=<root@extmon.ncl.ac.uk>, size=1417, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<201001191244.o0JCi6nN014100@extmon.ncl.ac.uk>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=cheviot10.ncl.ac.uk [128.240.234.10]

Jan 19 12:44:12 cheviotdb sendmail[23681]: o0JCiCpl023680: to="|/usr/local/sbin/wimp list-name=wimp-test", ctladdr=<wimp-test@cheviotdb.ncl.ac.uk> (8/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=31628, dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: prog mailer (/bin/sh) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL

With /usr/sbin/smrsh as the prog mailer I got something similar:

Jan 19 10:25:29 cheviotdb sendmail[10316]: o0JAPTIT010316: from=<root@extmon.ncl.ac.uk>, size=1419, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<201001191025.o0JAPOES004686@extmon.ncl.ac.uk>, proto=ESMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=cheviot10.ncl.ac.uk [128.240.234.10]

Jan 19 10:25:29 cheviotdb sendmail[10317]: o0JAPTIT010316: to="|/etc/smrsh/wimp list-name=wimp-test", ctladdr=<wimp-test@cheviotdb.ncl.ac.uk> (8/0), delay=00:00:00, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=prog, pri=31630, dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: prog mailer (/usr/sbin/smrsh) exited with EX_TEMPFAIL
