There are two milters in use - milter-bcc and clamav-milter. They were 
installed many months ago, and there have been no changes to any part of 
the mail system for a long time. 

A couple of hours before the errors started I got this


clamav-milter[9279]: write failure (65535 bytes) to clamd: Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
last message repeated 39 times
clamav-milter[9279]: write failure (9073 bytes) to clamd: Contentent-Transfer-Encoding:
8bit
clamav-milter[9279]: jAT137W7009277: Temporary file -> write ERROR
