While this is the solution I often prefer and mentioned in the 
documentation, not everyone wants to build from source, prefering to 
remain within the official release and package system.

On FreeBSD Volker Stolz heard my cries of pain and suffering over the 
age of BDB 1.85 that he did manage to get the FreeBSD /usr/ports 
sendmail maintainer to add some knobs to make this easier to do. I'm not 
sure OpenBSD nor NetBSD can use FreeBSD /usr/ports as-is, without some
